The old Sorcerer chuckles quietly to himself as he walks along the forest trail. With one hand on your shoulder and the other stroking his long white beard, he pauses to speak to you.
"Niki, this is your very last chance to become an Official Sorcerer. You have been on a government sponsored training course for the past 5 years and SHE who must be obeyed has cut out all your allowances. Therefore we are going to put you in the Enchanted Cottage for a spell, if you'll pardon the pun. Escape and not only will you gain your diploma but also a position in the Civil Services with an index-linked pension. No reward could be higher."
The original River Software versions were for Spectrum (PAW), C64 (Quill), and Atari ST (STAC).
The PAWed Amstrad CP/M port was produced by the Adventure Workshop.

Engrossing little game, easy to get side-tracked. At the end I had forgotten the original aim of the game, and thought I was on a treasure quest!
This game appears to have a bug. Each spell ostensibly requires you to be holding the correct focus object to be effective. At least one will, however work without having found the focused object with which it is associated.
The Commodore 64 version differs markedly from the Spectrum one right from the get go. Aside from subtleties such as "ise" words in the Spectrum version ending in the Americanised "ize," in the former version there are seven spells, not six and the bug with the giant puzzle not requiring the focussed object to work has been removed; Ben Gunn's responses are different too. All this in just the first few locations.
