Barry Basic and the Quick Escape (walkthrough-barry-basic-and-the-quick-escape.txt)

Walkthrough for Barry Basic and the Quick Escape, by Dee Cooke

written by Andrew Schultz for solutionarchive.com

This is a fun game where you switch between two, and later three, player-characters. Gill and Tony
need to rescue their friend Barry, who's been locked in a room in a science institute where he
went snooping. Everyone has their own skills. Barry is the techie, Gill is more verbal, and Tony is
physically strong. But they have weaknesses, too. So this means that, for a lot of tasks, only one
player-character will do.

It placed 2nd of 10 in the 2021 Text Adventure Literacy Jam, which had a lot of fun entrants.

There are some optional achievements as well. This walkthrough should cover them. The graphics are
well done, with changes in the room being twiddled as the escape plot unfolds. >>(command)
means a command that gives you information that will make a bit more sense of this walkthrough or
fill out some backstory.

>>TALK GILL
>>I
>>X RUCKSACK

>OPEN RUCKSACK
>X NOTEBOOK
>X BOG

>GET SPADE

>>TALK GILL

(Note: we need to have read the notebook so Gill knows she is not wasting her money. So we can
assume Gill read over Tony's shoulder. If Tony tries to make a call, the circles in the phone
are too small.)

>SWITCH GILL

>GET COINS

>ENTER BOX

>CALL 555-7202

>EXIT
>SWITCH BARRY

>>I

This tells you you have a ball.

>X HOOK

Otherwise, THROW BALL immediately says "you have no reason to throw that around."

>THROW BALL
>GET WOOD

You can't quite GET KEY right away, but...

>HIT KEY

(with the wood)

>GET KEY
>UNLOCK CABINET
>X CABINET

Ah! A manual!

>GET MANUAL
>READ MANUAL

>X COMPUTER

Now to get some alternate points. You get some instadeaths for not following the manual, which only
makes sense. Only one of the four works. You'll know which, if you read the manual. Or you can
use trial and error. I've gotten the knob and lever.

>TURN DIAL
>TURN KNOB
>PULL LEVER
>PUSH BUTTON

The "right" action can be repeated without any bad endings.

>OPEN BOX
>GET LADDER
>GET WELLIES
>WEAR WELLIES

>PLACE LADDER

If you try to CLIMB LADDER, you can't jump out a twenty-foot window! You'll need your
friends' help.

>SWITCH GILL
>N
>TALK GUARD

This keeps the guard occupied. Gill's skill at English class pays off here!

>SWITCH TONY

Tony, being a jock (or whatever they call them across the pond,) does the heavy lifting now.

>CLIMB TREE
>GET ROPE
>GET TORCH
>D

>CLIMB WALL

You can't get the ladder out of the mud without a reason.

>X WINDOW

Now you use the spade to ...

>DIG LADDER
>PUSH LADDER

>SWITCH BARRY

>CLIMB LADDER
>EXIT
>D

Oh no! Barry can't climb down the ladder.

>>PUSH LADDER

Oops! You need another way out. Tony would've made it fall, too.

We could save turns getting out quickly, but we want to save supplies for our next heist. Oh, and
get all the accomplishments.

>SWITCH TONY
>TIE ROPE

>SWITCH BARRY
>CLIMB ROPE

>SWITCH TONY
>CLIMB ROPE
>CLIMB WALL

Now that the gang's back together, they'll follow each other more.

>S
>LIGHT TORCH

That gets rid of the monster!

This is an optional achievement below, but you might as well. Barry's equipped to enter the
swamp with the wellies, so ...

>SWITCH BARRY
>W
>GET COMPONENT
>E

Now to win the game

>S

Enjoy the ending!
