Walkthrough for Twelve Days, One Night by BJ Best Written by Andrew Schultz blurglecruncheon@gmail.com Twelve Days, One Night was an entrant to the Adventuron 2020 Christmas jam, and its placing of 11th of 12 seems extremely harsh, even in a strong field! It's a clever concept, well-executed. Eh, well, the author won IFComp under a year later, so I suspect the wounds have healed. https://itch.io/jam/an-adventuron-christmas-jam/community has this and other very nice games. CASA or David Welbourn's site should have most or all of them. This walkthrough attempts to get through as quickly as possible, without too much retracing steps. Note since W, E, DROP and GET are the only commands you use, you *can* stumble through. I encourage it. It gets easier later. The numbers in parentheses after the commands correspond to the day of Christmas for each gifts There are only three rooms. Storage closet, living room, kitchen from west to east. The basic idea is this: you need to drop twelve gifts in the living room, but some need preparation. There are puns in the game. You can only carry three items at once, one of which is likely a list of things you need. Let's start with a present that can help us get the next one. >W >GET PAPER >GET HATS >GET GEESE >E >DROP HATS >DROP GEESE (6) Hooray! Our first present, six geese a-laying. You need both the geese and hats. And we freed up an inventory space. >GET EGG Now also the cell phone needs to be taken and, once its information is copied over, dropped. Let's get it out of the way early. We also want to drop the list, because there's this walkthrough, and it frees up an inventory slot. >GET CELL PHONE >E >DROP EGG This starts the recipe for a small something to eat. >GET PEN Okay, wrapping paper is now gone as an item. Now we need to get and drop some stuff to prepare it. >GET JUG >DROP JUG (You can use "it" as a pronoun, too. If you really want to optimize, hit the up arrow twice after each "get." Adventuron doesn't care about it/them disambiguation here.) >GET KNIFE >DROP KNIFE >GET POTS >DROP POTS >GET SLICES >DROP SLICES Hooray! Another present created. But I'm going to actually prepare another first. The order doesn't matter in the endgame, but I'm looking for stuff that will streamline things. In this case, the chicken (drumsticks) is subsumed by the drummers. >GET CHICKEN This item will disappear into another. >W Free up that inventory space some more. We know what we want. Note dropping the list first means you keep the phone if you try to drop it. >DROP CELL PHONE >DROP LIST >W >GET DRUMMERS Two more slots to fill! These seem most efficient. >GET MYRRH >GET MAIDS >E >DROP DRUMMERS (12) Two of twelve gifts! >DROP MAIDS They have nothing to milk, but unlike other items, the maids won't flee if you drop them in the center need to prepare things first. >E >GET PIPES The myrrh helps stick the pipes together befor vanishing from your inventory >GET BREAD The bread will clog up an inventory space, since you can't drop it into the mixing bowl. But it reveals an important item when you take it. There's no way around this. You need the bread to get the next ingredient. >GET CRUMBS >W >DROP CRUMBS >W >GET PIPERS Again, since the pipers get the pipes, this doesn't add to inventory. >GET DOVES The doves won't flee now. They'll eat the crumbs. >E >DROP PIPERS (11) >DROP DOVES (2) 4/12! >W >GET BIRDS >GET COW >E >DROP BIRDS (4) Calling birds, cell phone... 5/12. >DROP COW Nothing for the cow. We need something to hold the milk they can give. >E >GET JUG >GET RINGS >w >DROP RINGS (5) >DROP JUG (8) This gets you to 7/12. >GET JUG The rings will help later. The jug is the final ingredient for our delicacy... >E >DROP JUG >DROP BREAD ...French toast! >GET TOAST >GET PEAR >GET POTS Now you're done in the kitchen! >W >DROP PEAR >DROP TOAST >DROP POTS This is prep work. >W The rest can be done in any order, since the preparation's there. >GET HENS >GET PARTRIDGE >GET SWANS >e >DROP PARTRIDGE (1) >DROP HENS (3) >DROP SWANS (7) Up to 10/12. >W >GET LORDS >GET LADIES >E >DROP LORDS (10) >DROP LADIES (9) See the trivia if you want. Sleeping just ends the game. SUMMARY: 1 PARTRIDGE requires pear. 2 DOVES require bread crumbs, which may require you to carry bread for a while. 3 HENS require french toast, which takes a while to create, and it requires the MAIDS a-milking (8). Thus you can't go 1-2-3 up to 12. 4 BIRDS require cell phone, which requires you to write your notes on paper. If you don't, you shoo the birds away. However, you can drop both your phone and paper in the living room. 5 RINGS require the onion. 6 GEESE require straw hats, produce eggs for the french toast. 7 SWANS require pots full of water. 8 MAIDS require the jug and cows, which require the DOVES cooing (2). Thus you can't go 12-11-10 down to 1. 9 LADIES DANCING require PIPERS (11) and DRUMMERS (12). 10 LORDS require (onion) RINGS (5). Five rings to impress them all! 11 PIPERS require pipes, which require the myrrh and filling pots full of water. But 7 and 11 can be done in either order. 12 DRUMMERS require the chicken.
